As the weather warms it is with excitement that we anticipate this years AFRICA OYÉ celebrations in Sefton Park. As always a bill of exciting names is being curated to bring a wide array of sounds from Africa and the Caribbean to the June shindig. LURA and MAREMA are the latest names to be added to the line-up.
The first international female solo artist to be announced for this year event is Cape Verde’s Lura. When studying sports education in Lisbon, Lura was approached by Juka, a singer from São Tome and Principe, and asked to perform on his album. Her deep, sensual voice captivated listeners, and she recorded her first album Nha Via in 1996. Her latest album, Herança (2015), encapsulates the vibrant and rich culture of Cape Verde.
Senegalese singer-songwriter Marema has also been unveiled by the Oyé team. She was born in the suburbs of Dakar, and cites Tracy Chapman as a great influence on her music. Following the positive reception to her first single Businesswoman (2014), Marema has won a number of international music awards.
Every year, Sefton Park plays host to the biggest free celebration of African and Caribbean music and culture in the UK. Beginning as a series of gigs around the city, AFRICA OYÉ now welcomes more than 50,000 people over two days. International artists join local performers, and DJs, dancing, workshops and food stalls keep the crowds entertained.
Lura and Marema join an already strong line-up of female artists that includes SONA JOBARTEH from the Gambia and Liverpool’s own REMÉE – who joins the bill as one of two Oyé Introduces artists. The festival’s Artistic Director Paul Duhaney agreed that “it was fantastic to have so many applications from female artists and female-led groups this year”. INNER CIRCLE, BINHAN and Merseyside MC NELSON will also perform at the event.
Africa Oyé festival will take place on 16th and 17th June, 2018 in Sefton Park from 12:30pm til 9:30pm on both days. Entrance is free. The full line-up can be found here.
