A truly Liverpool transatlantic love affair heads to LIMF
It is with great excitement that we announce a special commission for this years Liverpool International Music Festival. Johnny Echols, legendary guitarist in a band close to Bido Lito!‘s – and the hearts of a disproportionate amount of Liverpool music fans – LOVE, will be joined by special guests at this years LIMF Summer Jam for a special one-off performance.
There’s an old saying in Liverpool that you’re never more than 200 yards away from a copy of Love’s ‘Forever Changes’. Whether any truth exists in this is neither here nor there; what is indisputable is the indelible impact the record made – and continues to make – on the city’s musical conscience. (The fact that the saying exists in the first place, is worthy of note in itself.) Love had more of an impact in Liverpool than any other city outside their LA home, with their music playing a key intrinsic role in our city’s music culture
FROM LIVERPOOL WITH LOVE will feature artists from some of the citys most storied bands joining Echols to perform tracks from all three of Love’s classic albums including the masterpiece which has entered into Liverpool folklore, Forever Changes.
From the Eric’s era to the cosmic scouse explosion of the 00’s spearheaded by The Coral, the LA band’s shadow has loomed large over Merseyside for decades with Bido Lito! itself named after the club where Love honed their extraordinary sound.
The Sefton Park performance will be a celebration of this very Liverpool transatlantic love affair and a chance for the city’s contingent of fans to pay their respects to the iconoclastic Arthur Lee a decade after his death. Few musicians have the status that Arthur Lee, the group’s iconoclastic leader, is afforded in Liverpool. This status was cemented via his performance with cult Liverpool group Shack in 1992. Arthur went on to say, “the show in Liverpool is still the most memorable in my life”. The concert was later issued as a live album on storied Liverpool independent, The Viper Label.
Johnny Echols and Arthur Lee were childhood friends whose families both moved from Memphis to Los Angeles when they were children. Teenage Johnny and Arthur teamed up to form the groups Arthur Lee & The LAG’s and The American Four before they formed Love in 1965. This classic Love line up featuring Johnny disbanded in 1968 and Johnny didn’t play with the group again until reuniting with Arthur Lee in 2005, shortly before Arthur’s untimely death in 2006. Echols, who is in the city for a Love Revisited show at Leaf on Saturday 25th May will also be present for a special Q&A following a special showing of the documentary LOVE STORY at A Small Cinema which marks the beginning of this exciting project.
The From Liverpool With Love performance featuring Johnny Echols takes place at Sefton Park at part of LIMF Summer Jam on Sunday 24th July.
Love Story [screening followed by Johnny Echols Q&A] takes place at A Small Cinema, Victoria Street on Saturday 25th June.
